A RENEWED appeal has been made for traffic calming to be introduced near a school on a busy road in Wellington.
A member of the public attended Wellington Town Council’s and told councillors he was concerned about safety near St John’s Primary School.
He said that the traffic patrol person who helped people across the road was “getting stick” from disgruntled motorists.
“Is there anything we can do to improve safety down there?” he asked. “I do worry that we might have an accident there. I’m here talking to you as a parent, although I am also a school governor.”
The traffic situation in that area and the concerns about safety for pedestrians – especially schoolchildren – has been discussed on several occasions by the town council.
The mayor, Cllr Janet Lloyd, said: “This has been going on for years.”
Cllr Andrew Govier said: “Some representatives of the school came and spoke to us a few months ago and I did take it up with Somerset Council.
“But it seems as if the situation has got a little bit blurred. I will take up the situation again with Somerset Council.”
Cllr Govier explained that there appeared to be confusion over what area needed looking at – the main Taunton Road or Priory.
Pupils from St John’s Primary School in Priory attended the council’s economic development committee in June and gave a presentation about their concerns about speeding traffic and the obvious dangers to pedestrians when trying to cross the busy Taunton Road.
Teachers Sarah Brown and Lizzie Allen were also in attendance and they both echoed the views of the children.
The Year 5 pupils said that lowering the speed limit from 30mph down to 20mph would be “crucial” and would save lives and help everyone in the community, not just schoolchildren.
