THE M5 motorway past Wellington was reopened late Thursday night (September 21) after a medical incident saw traffic halted and diverted.

The southbound carriageway was closed between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 27 for Tiverton when emergency services were called to a person needing assistance.

Police then held traffic northbound while an air ambulance landed with specialist doctors to treat the patient.

Motorists travelling south were diverted off the motorway to use the A38 Wellington Relief Road, causing some congestion in the area.

Avon and Somerset Police led on the incident, which started at about 9.30 pm, and ambulance crews and National Highways traffic officers also attended.

Police described the incident as serious and confirmed that a person had needed medical assistance.
