MAYOR of Wellington Gary James has sent a message of condolence to the mayor of Torres Vedras in Portugal, Wellington’s twin town, following wildfires in which dozens of people died.

The fires, which also injured more than 250, began in the central municipality of Pedrógão Grande before spreading to neighbouring areas including Góis, Pampilhosa da Serra and Arganil.
In the message to Carmen Quaresma, Mr James wrote: “I would be most grateful if you could pass on my personal condolences and those of the people of Wellington for the loss of lives in the Portuguese fire. The loss of life is absolutely tragic and our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to all concerned.
“The world at the moment does not seem to have time to catch breath with one disaster after another but with good grace we will face adversity and overcome it. Grief is the price we pay for love and for those who have lost family we will keep thinking of you.”
