The Bristol-based band Fromage en Feu bring their head-spinning brand of jazzy, gypsy, world music to Clayhidon Hall later this month.
The talented six-piece group who, bizarrely, are all named after cheeses, promise an evening of high tempo, musical humour with a strong Balkan flavour and something approaching complete abandonment.
“Oompah mayhem” was how a Guardian critic described them.
They say they ‘play at speeds we can barely maintain, use ludicrous accents we can barely maintain and dress sharply – or not at all. Like the old Camembert left in a suitcase for a month, ours will be the ripest, fruitiest tunes at the peak of potency’.
Apparently the band was formed on a ferry from France to England, when clarinettist Bobby Cheddar was playing a Jewish melody and Jan van der Gouda picked up his trumpet and began to play along.
The gig on Saturday, January 26, starts at 8pm – doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 – to reserve, call Caroline Bendle on 01823 681047 or email
