The scheme, for the proposed demolition of the former medical centre and the development of 42 'later living' apartments, previously given unanimous backing by the town council, was recommended for refusal by planning officials on the grounds that the site was earmarked for 'vital' retail space.
But at a meeting of the borough council's planning committee on Wednesday a three-month deferral was agreed without a vote.
