AN application to develop a major part of Wellington town centre – mostly hidden from the view of the public – is going before planners.
Freemantle Developments, a privately owned company, is putting together a planning application to Taunton Deane Borough Council for the redevelopment of land next to the North Street car park in Wellington. It has the backing of Wellington Town Council and is likely to be approved.
The site has been the subject of previous planning applications for similar developments over the years which were approved but not delivered.
The current proposals include the redevelopment of numbers 3-6 Cornhill and the land at the back of 9-33 Fore Street for a scheme including demolition of 3 Cornhill; 3 Cornhill extended to form four flats; 4-6 Cornhill converted into four town houses; 34 other new build dwellings.
The draft proposals also include new access roads and pedestrian access points, car parking and ancillary hard and soft landscaping.
Agents Alder King say: “Freemantle Development has undertaken extensive pre-application discussions with officers at the council and the proposals have been developed over a period of time with careful consideration given to the layout.
“It is considered that these sustainable development proposals provide an exciting opportunity to deliver much needed housing in Wellington while also helping to enhance the site and Wellington’s Conservation Area.”
Much of the proposed site is overgrown and not visible to the public with access restricted by walls and boarding.
