TRAFFIC engineers have again looked at what can be done to try and ease congestion at one of Wellington town centre’s busiest points.
The possible installation of yellow box junction markings at the junction of South Street, North Street and High Street has been mentioned many times by lots of people locally as a way of solving traffic problems in the town.
Somerset County Council last looked at the suggestion in detail in April 2016 but it was decided that it could not be done because it would not work.
Members of Wellington Town Council heard this month that the idea had been rejected because vehicles entering the yellow box junction would not be able to see if their exit was clear – vehicles coming from South Street and intending to turn right would not able to see if their exit into High Street was clear until they had already entered the box because of the Shauls Bakery building.
A suggestion to have ‘Keep Clear’ markings provided in the area was also dismissed for the same reason.
But Cllr Andrew Govier, who represents Wellington at Somerset County Council, recently spoke with an area traffic engineer again about the problem junction to see if anything could be done.
Traffic light engineers say that once road works had been completed in the High Street area it is planned to change the traffic light sequence at the Longforth Road junction to better synchronise those lights with the ones at South Street and North Street.
But a council report said: “Although the aim was to improve traffic flow, there were difficulties in doing this satisfactorily.
“The major issue would be having to stop traffic coming along the High Street towards Longforth Road to allow HGVs travelling in the opposite direction to turn right into Longforth Road.”
