Music will be ringing from the rafters in Wiveliscombe when twelve hours of non-stop music takes place in St Andrew’s Church on Saturday, June 27, to raise funds for the organ.
From nine o’clock in the morning until nine in the evening, 24 groups and individuals of all ages, styles and instruments will play half-hour slots as visitors drop in and out as they wish.
In addition to raising money for the organ appeal, the event has been organised to provide an opportunity for players.
“Lots of people like to play music, in groups and on their own, and everyone loves to listen, so this will bring them together,” said organiser Tom Morrell.
Players will range from accomplished older musicians to young ones, from a group of folk-music mothers to a rock band, including trumpeters, organists, and more.
Admission is free, and there will be refreshments, but it is hoped donations will flow to help fund crucial repairs for the church organ.
“It is limping along, but if this were a cathedral, they would be raising millions to dismantle and rebuild it,” said Tom.
He explained the St Andrew’s Church organ was last rebuilt around 30 years ago, which is as old as it gets before it needs doing again, but in this case it will have to just be patched up.
“It’s good to have an organ, and we need to keep it going,” he said.
Word about the music day went out, and musicians of all kinds signed up on a first-come, first-served basis.
“It’s a random selection, and it works very well,” said Tom.
The evening will finish with a splash from Wivelele, the area’s ukulele players, and the Wiveliscombe Town Band, a brass band that has been playing since 1896.
