COUNCILLORS are hoping they will come up smelling of roses after agreeing to help sponsor two categories at this year’s Wellington Flower Show.

Members of Wellington Town Council’s economic development committee heard on Wednesday (June 10) that a request had been made by show secretary Sheena Page for the authority to help.

Councillors were told that the Wellington Flower Show receives no funding and is reliant on advertising and sponsorship.

The show organisers asked if the town council could sponsor the craft and/or the cookery sections of the event.

Councillors had no hesitation in agreeing that the council could sponsor both categories to the tune of £202.

Cllr Janet Lloyd said: “Let us not beat about the bush – I propose we pay the £202. The flower show brings a lot of people into the town.”

And the Mayor, Cllr Mark Lithgow, added: “It is a win-win for us because we will be supporting a local event and we will have our name on it as one of the sponsors.”

New committee chairman, Cllr Keith Wheatley, said: “The flower show is a long-running and popular event.”

The Wellington Flower Show is held twice yearly with the Spring Show in March and now all eyes are looking towards the Summer Show which is all set to take place on Saturday, August 29, at Wellington School with doors opening at 2pm and the presentation of cups and awards at 4.30pm.

It will be the 91st show put on by the Wellington Flower Show Society and include categories for fruit and vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants, floral art, cookery, arts and crafts for seniors and juniors and photography.
