A WAR of words between the town council and contractors over Wellington’s new-but-still-closed public toilets rumbled on this week.

The council hit out last week at Danfo (UK) Ltd, saying it had delivered a defective toilet block in Longforth Road and then failed to put faults right.

But, Danfo expressed disappointment the council had not spoken to it first, and said the authority might not know all the facts of the matter.

Now, council chief executive Dave Farrow has said he would welcome a meeting with Danfo, although the firm had not been in touch with him.

Mr Farrow said project manager Ravenslade had throughout the work been in regular contact with both Danfo and BVLR, which was overseeing the build, in relation to the quality of work being undertaken and the outstanding issues.

He said: “Our priority at this moment is to get the build completed to a satisfactory standard.

“Once that is done, we will review why there were so many issues with the unit and why it took so long to resolve them.”

The council had to hire portable toilets for Wellington’s annual carnival on Saturday (September 26) because the new conveniences could not be opened in time.

It is seeking to recover the cost from Danfo and is also imposing contract financial penalties.

In the meantime, £7,000 of bollards have now been set into the pavement in front of the new modular building to prevent a repeat of the car crash which damaged the former toilets in 2022 and led to the new block being commissioned.
