NORTH Street in Wellington was closed without warning this week for emergency works to take place.

The road had been scheduled to close from April 2 for Wessex Water to carry out pre-planned sewerage work.

However Wellington residents awoke on Saturday, March 23, to find the route closed to traffic.

Wessex Water has now revealed the closure was imposed while its workers deal with an “unplanned emergency water supply leak.”

Commenting on the closure a spokesperson for the water company said:

“We have had to issue an emergency closure of a small section of North Street, between Lodge Close and the junction of Courtland Road and Victoria Street, to repair a leak on our water main. Our team are working hard on the repair and aim to reopen the road as soon as possible.

“This is completely separate to our planned sewer repair on North Street, that will involve a road closure between Burbage and Bishops Court, from Tuesday 2 April to Friday 12 April. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this essential work.”

It comes after some residents took to social media at the weekend to post images which appeared to show water spilling out of some of the road’s drains.

Posting to a Facebook group for local residents, one member joked: “New water feature in North Street” after posting what looked like a small fountain springing from the road.

The road remains scheduled to close from April 2.
