A MAJOR police inquiry was underway in Wellington after a man suffered what were described as ‘serious injuries’ in an incident on a housing estate early today.

One person was arrested after the incident in Jurston Lane and remained in police custody this afternoon.

Emergency services were maintaining a large presence and Jurston Lane was cordoned off with two PCSOs preventing access for anybody who was not a resident.

Evidence of identification had to be shown before the police allowed anybody through the cordon.

One man became distressed after giving an address on the estate at which he said he lived but was then refused access because he did not have ID with him.

The man, who had travelled back to Wellington from Taunton, told the Wellington Weekly: “I was told it might be family but I do not know. My mum is not answering her phone."

Five police vehicles could be seen on the access road to the estate and an ambulance paramedic car was seen driving into and out of the road.

Police in forensic outfits were visible and detectives were seen talking to a number of residents.

The Wellington Weekly was told an official statement would be released this afternoon once close family members had been updated by the investigating officers.

The incident was reported to police shortly before 8.30 am and residents posted on social media reports of a number of ambulances and police cars rushing to the scene.

Rumours were rife on social media about what had happened, but police asked people not to speculate on the nature of the incident.

The Wellington Weekly has been running a live blog with the latest news on the incident and as a local newspaper has been handling reports with sensitivity for those who may be involved.
