WELLINGTON Townswomen’s Guild has celebrated its 60th anniversary by holding a party for members.
And the anniversary cut was officially cut by the guild’s oldest member, Mrs Doreen Westcott, which was given by the chairman Mrs Joyce Jones.
It was in January, 1956, when 23 ladies attended a meeting held at the British Legion Club in White Hart Lane and elected Mrs S Kenyon as its first chairman.
Meetings these days are held at Lodge Close on the first Tuesday evening of each month at 7.30 p.m.
Members enjoy the objects of the guild – ‘to advance the education of women, irrespective of race, creed and party, so as to enable them to make the best contribution towards the common good.’
A Friendship, Social Studies and a Luncheon Club are held during each month.
Local and national charities have been supported over the years and £11,215 donated between the years 1969 and 2005.
The guild run a stall at the yearly Wellington Hospital League of Friends Fete.
