LIDL says its plans for a new store on the Taunton Road and Nynehead Road roundabout in Wellington have received significant support.

It carried out a public consultation earlier this month which involved a dedicated website, online petition and distribution of cards to households in and around Wellington.

In total, 4,882 responses were received from the card distribution with 87 per cent in favour of the plans.

The new supermarket, with a 1,350sq m sales area, would include an in-store bakery and customer toilets, 126 car parking spaces with six disabled spaces, nine parent and child and two electric vehicle charging spaces, alongside ample parking for bicycles.

If plans for the scheme are approved about 40 new full- and part-time jobs would be created.

Matthias Daly, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: “We are thrilled with the positive reaction we have received so far for this new store. We believe it will bring a huge benefit to the community, helping all residents have access to our fresh, high quality and great value produce.”

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.45bn investment in its expansion across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020.
