PUBLIC notices cover a range of applications, ranging from licensing applications for liqueur or entertainment to planning applications, roadworks and other works.

Their intention is to inform communities of the latest plans in their area and such applications are considered for approval or refusal by local authorities.

Here is one of the latest applications submitted to Somerset Council:

A former guesthouse is Minehead is seeking conversion into three, two-bedroom dwellings.

Tranmere House at the southern end of Tregonwell Road is a three-storey terrace property currently used as residential dwelling after the business ceased trading three years ago. The guest house had offered eight guest rooms over three levels with owner accommodation and parking at the rear for four vehicles.

The application site is protected under the Wellington Square Conservation Area.

The proposal is to convert each of the three floors into a two-bedroom dwelling with minimal alterations needed. There are no external alterations proposed with the footprint of the building remaining unchanged and “all materials used for the alterations and general refurbishment would be sympathetic to the conservation area and local vernacular.”

The parking strategy would allocate the four parking spaces between the ground and first floor flats and the second floor flat allocated the bicycle storage area. The design and heritage specifies: “The parking spaces are set out in tandem and therefore it would not be practical to divide these spaces between three units.”

It continues: “The site is located within a short walking distance of the town centre, which has various amenities and bus routes. We therefore conclude that the parking strategy would be suitable for the conversion.”

The design statement concludes: “This application seeks to refurbish and reconfigure the building to a high standard, which includes the retention of the external appearance and the creation of three residential units which can be added to the housing stock.

"The existing guest house ceased trading three years ago and therefore the loss of the guest house would have no impact on employment.”

Minehead Town Council resolved that the committee could see no material reason to object to the application with councillors noting, that whilst it was regrettable to see “this type of accommodation/business cease”, they considered that “the provision of additional residential accommodation would be beneficial to the town.”
