Traffic was stopped on the M5 in Somerset early on Friday as police dealt with a 'concern for welfare' incident involving a woman.
Police took the female to a place of safety shortly before 2.30am and the motorway was reopened.
The incident happened between Junction 26 for Wellington and Junction 25 for Taunton.
National Highways issued an alert that traffic had been stopped while Avon and Somerset Police dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "This was a concern for welfare incident, which officers attended. A woman was taken to a place of safety. The motorway was open again by 2.30am."
