POLICE in Wellington had been ‘decimated’ over recent years, said Cllr Andrew Govier at the January meeting of Wellington Town Council.

He was commenting on the new Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Plan whose main priorities include protecting the most vulnerable from harm and strengthening and improving Local Policing Teams (LPT).

“In Wellington we seem to be moving away from LPTs,” he said. “We have lost a PC and a PCSO, and now only have one PC and two PCSOs in the town to cover Wellington and the large surrounding area.”

The mayor, Cllr Bob Bowrah, said he had the telephone numbers of all the PCSOs and had tried to get through to them on occasions but without success.

That showed how thinly they were spread out 24/7 over such a big district and was not meant as a criticism of the PCSOs but illustrated the situation of police cover.
