IMPROVEMENTS are to be made to improve the flow of traffic in the centre of Wellington, town councillors were told at their monthly meeting on Monday night.
A report said: “The traffic congestion in the centre of the town at certain times of the day has long been a concern of the town council and its residents.
“The County Council have been considering the possibility of much needed improvements to the junction at Longforth Road.
“They have been looking at the possibility of revamping the pedestrian crossing at the top of Longforth Road together with ways to improve traffic flows through this junction by incorporating right-hand turning lanes into Longforth Road and Waitrose.

“Unfortunately there is insufficient space available to incorporate extra lanes or filter lanes so any improvement would have to be based on the amount of road available.
“The council council have now come forward with suggestions to introduce alternative traffic light staging proposals which would increase the flow of traffic through this junction.
“It is important to note, however, that although these proposals will make a noticeable difference they will not entirely solve the problem.”
