A COMMUNITY ‘Day of Action’ is being planned as the next step in a battle to prevent 250 houses being built on farmland outside Wellington.

Campaign group Protect Wellington is taking part in a national initiative organised by the Community Planning Alliance (CPA) on Saturday, April 18.

CPA was formed five years ago to provide support, resources, and training for grassroots campaign groups and to lobby for changes to the planning system.

Protect Wellington was created after Pegasus Group put forward plans for a housing estate in fields around Middle Green Farm, to the south of the A38 relief road and outside the town’s development boundary.

The national ‘Day of Action’ brings together residents, campaigners, and community groups to stand up for sustainable development and the protection of green spaces.

In Wellington, people are being invited to gather at 11 am opposite Swains Lane to show their opposition to the Pegasus plans.

The event includes a guided walk along public footpaths across part of the site, with a local ecologist expected to attend, to help raise awareness of the importance of responsible planning and the preservation of local farmland and vital green spaces.

A spokesperson said: “We believe development should be thoughtful, sustainable, and in line with what our community truly needs.

“The farmland is a vital part of our local landscape, and we want to ensure it is protected for future generations.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Wellington residents to come together and make their voices heard.”

The spokesperson said the event was family-friendly and suitable for all ages.

They said: “Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and neighbours to show their support for responsible planning and the preservation of Wellington’s green spaces.”

Last month, about 300 people attended a Protect Wellington rally on land next to the site, before marching into the town centre.
