THREE Wellington charities said thank you to the town’s Co-op and its staff and customers last week for raising funds for them.

Read Easy Wellington, which helps adult non-readers, the Friends of Beech Grove and Waterloo Road Community Pre-school were the charities staff chose to benefit this year.

Volunteers from Read Easy Wellington were in the store to thank staff and customers for choosing them and donating £3,184.47 which will largely pay for the special books and teaching aids it uses in its confidential, one-to-one coaching.

The Co-op’s community fund nationally has raised £19 million this year.

Actress Amanada Barrie, who starred in ITV’s Coronation Street for many years, was shopping in the store and delighted to be in the photo to support Read Easy, a new national charity. She said she was dyslexic herself.

Alison Weekes said: “We are extremely grateful for this financial help. We have just completed our training of one 50 year old local man and are currently coaching four more people.

“Life can be incredibly difficult if you are unable to read well and it can bring huge hardship, excluding people from many parts of ordinary life. And it takes courage to admit to being unable to read well, or at all.”
