WELLINGTON’S newest charity is searching for adults who find reading difficult.

Read Easy Wellington is hoping friends and relatives of adults with reading problems will encourage them to get in touch for confidential one-to-one teaching.

It has taken a year to get this new branch of the five year old national charity up and running and there is now a full committee, a co-ordinator and 12 trained coaches for the town. All of them are volunteers.

Chairman Alison Weekes says she is very grateful that the town council has awarded Read Easy Wellington a grant of £1,500 to start its work. Initially this will pay for the training manuals and other books and resources needed.

She said: “This grant has helped us immensely with our start-up costs and to pay for our teaching manuals. About one adult in six in the UK today struggles with reading, and it is never too late to learn. Life can be quite a struggle if you find reading difficult.

“All our volunteers are new to this, but we are told some people can complete the course in as little as six months, while others may take a year. Reading sessions last half an hour and are held twice a week.”

She added: “We are still searching for quiet venues where a reader and coach can meet without being overlooked but where there are always other people around.”
