THE owner of a small plot of land in Wellington being used as a scrap ’drop-off’ has decided to close it down.

Local businessman Michael Tucker bought the land in Longforth Road last year and allowed a local scrap merchant to use it free of charge.

But this has brought criticism from the public and was spotlighted in Knott’s Notes in the WWN last week.

Sofas and mattresses have been dumped around a lorry being used on the land to take away the scrap metal and its tyres have been slashed by vandals.

It is almost in the centre of the town and has become unsightly for visitors arriving at the nearby bus and car port.

Mr Tucker said: "I did not think I was doing anything wrong when I allowed the lorry to be left there as a drop-off point.

"It was purely for scrap metal and saving local people a journey out to the Poole tip. I didn’t expect there to be fly-tipping.

"There was never going to be anything sold from the lorry. But a minority have spoilt it for everyone. Because of this I will now be closing it down."
