SILENTS in the Hills 2018, the Wiveliscombe Festival of Silent Cinema, is showing three specially selected films this weekend to mark the end of the First World War.

Hearts of the World kicks off the festival, founded in 2005, at Wiveliscombe Primary School – the venue for all the screenings – on Saturday, November 3, at 3pm. It is directed by D W Griffith, one of the great pioneers of cinema, and stars the legendary Lillian Gish. Admission is £4.

The Big Parade, directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert, is screened the same day at 7.30pm and admission is £5. The 4k digital restoration of the film will be shown with music by Carl Davis, celebrated for his music for the seminal documentary series The World at War and for the epic Napoleon.

All Quiet on the Western Front, a 1930 film by Lewis Milestone, is screened on Sunday, November 4, at 7.30pm. The film makes stunning use of sound but in many ways retains the visual grammar of the silent era. It stars Lew Ayres – the original Dr Kildare.

A season ticket for all three films is £12. Doors open 30 minutes before screenings and refreshments will be available. For more information or to book tickets email [email protected] or phone 01984 629114.
