A SOMERSET-based charity is looking for help from people in the Wellington area to see if they know anyone who it has helped over the past 100 years.
The Somerset Sight charity was founded in 1919 in direct response to the needs of wounded soldiers returning from the First World War.
The charity’s aims are much the same now as they were 100 years ago - to provide immediate practical help and information, gadgets and gizmos, reduce isolation and promote wellbeing so that visually impaired people can remain independent and continue to do the things they enjoy.
The group was originally named Somerset County Committee for the Welfare of the Blind at its first meeting on Saturday, February 8, 1919.

In 2019 the charity will be celebrating its centenary and it is trying to piece together some more of its history and find out about some of the people it has has helped in the last 100 years.
The charity hopes to create a commemorative brochure and hold an exhibition to showcase its 100-year history.
If you know anything, no matter how big or small, please do get in touch with the charity and help celebrate this great achievement.
Holly Sutton, development officer for Somerset Sight said: “We are not only proud to be celebrating our centenary but also the support we have been offering visually impaired people and their families for the last 100 years.
“This is a very exciting time for us and we have a fantastic programme of events to celebrate in 2019.”
If you can help in any way through volunteering, auction and raffle prizes, or contributing history, please get in touch with Holly on 01823-366147 or [email protected]
