ALTHOUGH members were sad at the loss of another local skittle alley, Wellington town councillors decided at their October meeting not to raise any objection to an application for the demolition of the alley at The Dolphin, 37 Waterloo Road, Wellington.

The scheme also involves knocking down a beer cellar and erecting a single-storey extension to the rear of the pub, the conversion of a garage to holiday let accommodation and the conversion of roof space to ancillary accommodation.

Cllr Bob Bowrah said he was sad about the loss of another skittle alley, pointing out that the Green Dragon pub in South Street had closed only a short time ago.

His sentiments were shared by Cllr Andrew Govier who felt that the plan might be the first step to losing the pub in the future, which would mean the loss of another facility in the town. He considered it might eventually move over to just providing accommodation. The loss of the alley could affect the overall viability of the pub.

Taunton Deane Borough Council will make the final decision on the application.
