NO changes will be made by Somerset Council to its council tax support scheme before April next year despite the threat of a Judicial Review hanging over it.

The authority changed its council tax reduction scheme last year to ‘standardise’ levels of support offered across the county while addressing the wider financial pressures threatening to force it into bankruptcy.

But disabled resident Andy Mitchell is taking the council to a Judicial Review, with his legal team arguing the system ‘unlawfully penalises disabled people and others with additional needs’.

Somerset is contesting the case and said the law prevented any changes in council tax support until the end of the 2026-27 financial year.

Council deputy leader Cllr Liz Leyshon said priorities would be reviewed for the 2027-28 year.
