ST ANDREW’S Church, Wiveliscombe, was the venue for a charity concert and Drumhead Service in honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of the Somme.
About 180 people saw an excellent performance by Wiveliscombe Town Band and the Taunton Military Wives Choir.
Revd David Widdows conducted the Drumhead Service and Taunton Sea Cadets, led by Paul Frazer, formed the drumhead.
Standards from Taunton, Wellington and Wiveliscombe were on parade.
The highlight of the evening was Second World War veteran Ray Budd’s rendition of ‘Roses of Picardy’. Jan Setterington read a First World War poem.
Sir Christopher Airy and Major Mike Morin laid wreathes in honour of the fallen.
Principal guests were Mayor of Wellington Bob Bowrah, Leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council Cllr John Williams, Somerset County Royal British Legion chairman Robert McDonald and chairman of Wiveliscombe Town Council Bryn Wilson.
A total of £505 was raised in support of the Royal British Legion.
