WWN readers may have seen the recent documentary on ITV Jim Carter – Lonnie Donegan and Me.

It featured music greats including Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Ringo Star and Roger Daltry, all of whom stated that Lonnie Donegan was the act that gave them the feeling they could create their own music.

Changing his name from Tony to Lonnie in honour of his favourite Blues artist Lonnie Johnston, Donegan created Skiffle and filled dance floors around the UK with this unique new sound including tracks such as Rock Island Line, Cumberland Gap and his massive novelty hit My Old Man’s a Dustman, coming onto the scene before Elvis brought rock and roll from the United States.

Move forward nearly 60 years, and taking over the mantle his father left with his death in 2002, his son Peter now tours with the original Lonnie Donegan Band, singing his father’s songs, as well as his own.

Tiverton Community Arts Theatre is bringing his show back to Tiverton for the audience to look back to the birth of modern music Lonnie created, in the company of the men who were there with him for the whole ride.

Peter Donegan and The Lonnie Donegan Band are appearing on Saturday, May 7, at 8pm.

It is a relaxed cabaret seated evening with full bar and tickets priced £14.50 are available from the box office, The Busy Bee, 25 Fore Street, Tiverton, by phone on 07443 502523 or online at www.tivertontheatre.com
