THE residents of Springfield Road and Riverside in Wellington are gearing up for a high point of their calendar this weekend.

They will be decking out their houses, sprucing up their front gardens and setting up stalls all the way from the sports centre to the car park near Swallowfield for a spring-time jamboree on Sunday.

All sorts of goods will be on offer from 10am-2pm including plants, handicrafts, knitted items, clothes, cakes, scones, home-made jams and fresh laid eggs, children’s toys and even furniture

Gibby Swaine, of Riverside, said: “It’s lovely just to walk with the kids up and down the road. Everyone’s so friendly and chatty here, and with all the stalls out, it’s going to be great. The street sale is such a great way to share our common values – re-use, recycle – and it’s really good fun, too.”

The stall outside number 66 will be manned by Roshan Adve, 14, who, along with friend and neighbour Tom Disney, 13, and other pupils at Court Fields School, will be raising money for an expedition to Madagascar next year.

Christine Phillips says the sale is a wonderful way to spread her gardening know-how and sell on the potted plants she grows from seeds each year. “I love knowing that these plants will spread their roots and thrive in someone else’s garden,” she said. “I have so many in mine, I’m not sure where to put them all.”

For others, the street sale is a chance to do a bit of decluttering – a perfect opportunity to empty out the cupboards and spring clean the closets.

Anita Roy said: “You never know what bargains you’ll come across. With bunting along the street, and all the spring flowers out, this is a chance for Springfielders to show off what people believe to be ‘the best little street in town’. There’s a fantastic community spirit in this little corner of Wellington.”
