THE Wellington and Wiveliscombe areas suffered with the rest of the country from Storm Ciara over the weekend – the biggest storm in seven years.
Roads were blocked by fallen trees and water running off rain-soaked fields, and swollen rivers. Flights at Bristol Airport were cancelled and trains delayed because of debris on tracks.
A large tree in the grounds of St John’s Church in Wellington came crashing down in the strong winds while Cornhill was closed as a safety precaution.
Pyles Thorne – widely used by drivers to get onto the relief road – was blocked on Monday after a tree fell across the road.
Storm Ciara also disrupted the outdoor sporting programme on Sunday with many events postponed or cancelled.
The storm and rain continued on Monday with the possibility of falling tiles being particularly a danger to pedestrians and drivers.
It was certainly not a day for umbrellas while portable shop signs went walkabout.
The emergency services’ advice was to stay at home if possible and not to venture out.
