OAKE’S annual fete and car boot sale raised funds for the local school and village and district hall.

After a cloudy start to the afternoon, the sun shone through and everyone had an enjoyable time.

A wide variety of stalls offered all the usual favourites – balloons, books, bottles, bric-a-brac, cakes, local produce and plants.

Amusements aplenty kept everyone, from young to old, entertained – balloon catapult, bouncy castles, hook-a-duck, face painting, glitter tattoos, hoopla, plate smash, raffle, skittles, teddy tombola, welly wanging and Chipper, the Oake Manor Squirrel.

Children and teachers from Oake, Bradford & Nynehead School ran games including giant Jenga, human fruit machine, splat the rat and speed goal. The school choir performed its latest hit, Wade on the Water, along with other songs, and the school dance troop showed off its country dancing skills.

Keeping everyone fed and watered were the ladies from the WI serving cream teas, local villagers on the bar and school parents manning the barbecue and ice cream stand.

Two dozen pairs lined up for the much anticipated Eggstreme Challenge and, after many a cracking exchange of eggs, Ed Livesey and Liam McClatchie emerged as victors over a considerable distance across the field.

Organisers are grateful to all the local businesses which contributed prizes – Oake Manor Golf Course, Tropiquaria, Oake Barn Photography, Oake & District Hall, The Anchor Inn, Wookey Hole, West Somerset Railway, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, Hestercombe Gardens, The Orchard Inn, Flying Start Children’s Riding Centre, Wellesley Cinema, Sweet ReTreat Beauty Therapy, AJZ Activity Centre, Sheppy’s Cider and Rumwell Farm Shop.

Organisers say 10Radio did a fantastic job of reporting on proceedings and providing the musical soundtrack to the afternoon.

They also thank everyone who played a part in making the fete such a success, from the dedicated team of volunteers planning, setting up, manning and clearing away stalls to the many people in the local community who came along and supported the event.
