THE Selwyn Aspin Memorial Day at the Playing Field on Sunday afternoon proved another big success with about 150 players – both young and not so young – involved in the event.
Selwyn was a popular former chairman and manager of both the first and youth teams.
The event, blessed with sunny weather and attended by Selwyn’s widow Amy and family, was supporting the local charity ‘Think Amy’ whose new board was unveiled on the day by Wellington Mayor Janet Lloyd.
A large number of spectators watched a youth penalty shoot-out and crossbar challenge, and a football match involving girls from the club’s teams and former players, with first team manager Clive Jones taking part.
The Mayor also presented medals to the youth teams at half-time.
Event organiser Leanne Godwin said afterwards: “Wellington Football Club would like to thank all who supported the event.
“Graham, Anne, Craig and Danny, family of Selwyn Aspin, attended and enjoyed both the youth penalty shoot-out, crossbar challenge and Selwyn’s memorial match.
“The game was a close 2-2 draw and both ladies and legends had a great game together with lots of banter.
“We raised a considerable amount for both the teams and our chosen charity ‘Think Amy’.
“Thanks go to all who attended the event and all those involved behind the scenes who assisted making the day run so smoothly.
“Special thanks also to Mayor Janet Lloyd, chaperoned by Andy Govier. Janet announced winners of the youth event and opened the new Think Amy board.”
