ATTEMPTS to end the free swimming scheme in Taunton Deane were dealt a blow last night.

The decision to end the scheme, enjoyed by some 9,000 people at Wellington Sports Centre, was referred back to the council's Executive by the all party community scrutiny committee.

The scheme, for under 16s and over 60s, was due to expire on July 31 afer Government funding was withdrawn.

The decision has been welcomed by Cllr Ross Henley, who represents Wellington East ward.

Cllr Henley, leader of the Lib Dem group said: "Free swimming is enjoyed by 9,000 people locally and is a great benefit to residents."

The motion to retain free swimming will now be considered by the council's Tory-dominated Executive.
