MOURNERS are invited to wear ‘something tangerine’ at the funeral service at Taunton Deane Crematorium on Friday (October 23) of long-time football supporter Winston Powell (11.30).
He died on Saturday, October 10, at his home after a long illness aged 74.
Winston was a former player with Wellington and later supported the club and was also a Blackpool fan.
“He will certainly be missed on match days,” said Wellington AFC’s vice-chairman Graham Aspin.
“He was a nice guy and was prepared to help out at the club whenever asked. He was always there to lend a hand when required.”
The football club’s former chairman, Ken Bird, said: “Winston had a lifelong association with the club, firstly as a player and then as a volunteer helper in different ways until his retirement.
“In recent years, he has been one of the first team’s keenest supporters and a small group of us have spent many hundreds of happy hours travelling to away matches.
“He loved his football and was also a lifelong supporter of Blackpool – ironically, both his favourite teams play in tangerine shirts and it’s very fitting that this will be reflected at his send-off.”
Mr Bird, who is also chairman of Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League, added: “Winston was well-known to skittlers in the town as a long-serving player with the football club’s Soccerites team.
“His kind nature and great sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him.”
Winston, a former worker at Relyon, lived at New Martins Buildings in Mantle Street and leaves a widow, Janet, and two grown-up children.
