Avtar Indian Dance is set to present the first Bollywood & Bhangra Folk Dance-a-Long of the year in Wellington today (Saturday, January 29).
It is taking to the dance floor once more at Wellington Scout Hall in Fore Street from 2pm for fun, social, inclusive workshops with a cultural emphasis following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.
Participants will be moving to toe-tapping music from India to improve their well-being and challenge their co-ordination - it is not a high impact activity and is suitable for people from all walks of life and all ages.
Dancers only need loose, comfortable colourful clothes that give freedom of movement, trainers or flat shoes which support the feet and a water bottle. Every session is followed by tea and time for a chat.
The community group danced at local community events before the pandemic and hopes to be out and about dancing again in 2022. It provides an opportunity for dancers to dress in authentic Indian costumes, show what they have learnt and encourage audiences to try out diverse dance.
The group is delighted to have the support of Wellington Town Council and was recently awarded a grant available to groups providing activities for local residents. The grant will be used to purchase a portable music system allowing it to take part in community events in the spring and summer.
