WELLINGTON Operatic Society’s Touring Group is looking forward to hosting the Coro Juvenil (Youth Choir) from Wellington’s Portuguese twin town Torres Vedras.

Members of the society were invited to Portugal last year, to sing at a number of venues, and now the choir from Torres is paying a reciprocal visit, arriving in the town next Thursday (September 1).

Members of the choir will be staying with the people who went to Portugal last year and a full programme of events and visits has been organised for them.

They will be joining the Touring Group in entertaining residents at the Abbeyfield home in Taunton and at Oaktree Court in Wellington, and will have visits to Sidmouth, Taunton and Exeter and to the town’s food and drink festival. There will be an opportunity to try playing bowls at Wellington Bowling Club and a skittles evening has also been organised.

The highlight of the visit will be a concert ‘Together in Harmony’, at which the choir will join members of the Operatic Society at the Arts Centre on Sunday, September 4, at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Odette’s Tea Room in High Street at a cost of £4 or can be bought on the door.

Monica Spalding, spokesperson for the Touring Group, said: “Having been made so welcome on our visit last year we are delighted that the choir is coming to Wellington.

“We are pleased to be able to put on this concert, giving the Portuguese choir the opportunity to sing to a Wellington audience and to join with the Operatic Society in providing an evening’s entertainment.

“We hope lots of people will come along to enjoy the evening and maybe learn some Portuguese! We are also most grateful for the financial support we have received from the town council that will enable us to host our visitors in true Wellington style.”
