COUNCILLORS have supported plans by The Mount Veterinary to install a temporary portable building at its site in Wellington to help during the Covid-19 restrictions.

The vets have applied to Somerset West and Taunton Council to use the temporary building at its headquarters in Taunton Road for a maximum of two years.

Members of Wellington Town Council’s planning committee heard on Monday – via Zoom conferencing facilities – that the portable building would be used as two veterinary consultation rooms.

“This temporary structure is required to aid compliance with social distancing guidelines as a result of coronavirus and will enable consultations to take place in a Covid-19 secure environment,” said the applicants.

“The proposed development will enable the practice to operate at its pre-Covid capacity.”

The Mayor of Wellington, Cllr Janet Lloyd, said she was pleased to support the application as it was helping social distancing, while Cllr Andrew Govier proposed councillors recommended approval.

Cllr John Thorne added: “We need to support local businesses. It’s difficult times for them.”

A final decision will be made by Somerset West and Taunton Council.
