Arts, culture and heritage are so important to our lives and this sector, like so many others, has been hard hit by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In recognition of this, Government launched a £1.57 billion Cultural Recovery Fund and I am delighted that a number of local organisations and venues have been awarded allocations.
The Hestercombe Gardens Trust and the National Trust’s Wellington Monument restoration project will share just over £1 million, and Taunton Theatre Association, which runs the Brewhouse, and South West Heritage Trust will share just under £400,000.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England were tasked to ensure those that are in real need receive this lifeline funding and I have worked to ensure our local organisations get their fair share.

Restoring this famous feature has been a priority of mine and working with the local community and stakeholders I’m pleased that it is still progressing, and that even in these difficult times its location remains a treasured place for a visit.
The Recovery Funds will also give the Brewhouse Theatre and the South West Heritage Trust some breathing space as they navigate through the ongoing challenges ahead.
On the latest regarding Covid-19 restrictions, the Prime Minister has announced a simplification of local rules by introducing a three-tiered system of alert levels.
I support the Government in seeking local consensus as to when and where this is necessary, working closely with stakeholders on the ground to take steps to drive down transmission.
Our infection rate locally remains notably lower than the worst affected regions but clearly infections are continuing to rise. As ever the situation remains under constant review and we must all play our part in keeping the virus under control to protect lives and livelihoods.
Please keep washing your hands, wear a face covering and abide by the rule of six, keeping socially distant from those outside your household or support bubble. The latest restrictions can be easily accessed via the new postcode checker found at www.gov.uk/find-coronavirus-
