POLICE have trained teams of Community Speedwatch volunteers to undertake speed monitoring in Holywell Lake and Ford Street.
Residents have become increasingly concerned over a number of years not only at the high speeds and careless attitude of some drivers, but especially at the rise in accidents and consequent casualties.
Ford Street in particular has become an accident blackspot with, it is believed, one of the worst records in the area. There have been about 50 casualties in the last ten years, some life-changing, and many other incidents involving only vehicle damage.
Both areas will be monitored by the teams, supported by the police and safety adviser, well into the foreseeable future and at different times of day. Police speed check vehicles will also be a presence. Villagers in Holywell Lake and Ford Street hope to prevent speeding, accidents and casualties.
They hope drivers passing through will help to achieve this, arrive at their destination safely and still on time.
The initiative is the culmination of much work over the years by local county councillor James Hunt, Wellington Without Parish Council, Somerset Highways and the police, and local residents.
A training session at the Beambridge Inn was very well supported and volunteers would like to thank not only to those who provided the training but the manager and staff for hosting the event.
