TOWN councillors were among the few people on the streets of Wellington as they started door to door delivery of a coronavirus ‘help and advice’ leaflet.
The leaflet is part of a £10,000 package of measures the council has adopted to help the community battle the virus emergency.
Wellington Mayor councillor Janet Lloyd told the WWN: “I am very grateful to councillors, staff and volunteers from the community who have stepped forward to help with this initiative.
“The leaflet has details of websites, email addresses and telephone numbers people can use if they need help.
“It also stresses the importance of the Government’s message to ‘stay home, protect the NHS, save lives’, and points residents to official websites for fuller information.”
Cllr Lloyd said councillors, staff and volunteers were clearly putting themselves at some risk by being out in the community rather than staying at home.
But she said: “We want to do whatever we can at this time of crisis to help protect the people we represent and the only way of getting the leaflet out quickly was to deliver it ourselves. While it is not going to be possible to reach 100 per cent of the homes in Wellington, we will get to absolutely as many as we possibly can.
“Hopefully, by the time the newspaper comes out we will have covered almost every neighbourhood to a greater or lesser degree.”
