AN annual gardens competition could be relaunched in Wellington if enough green-fingered residents are interested.

The town council is asking people if they would be interested in re-starting what was a popular community initiative in the 1990s and 2000s.

A survey form is available online for people to feed back their views to the council.

A council spokesperson said: “We are looking to gauge the community's interest in re-launching the Wellington in Bloom garden competition as a town council initiative.

“The original competition stopped running in the early 2010s but was a huge success, and huge fun, in the 90s and 00s.

“We would invite people who live within the Wellington boundary to enter their front or back garden into a competition against others in the town.

“There would be awards in different categories, eg environmental, floral, water garden, and judging will be undertaken by the open spaces manager and at least two councillors.

“Please fill out the form to let us know if this competition is something you would be interested in entering later this year.

“Please note, this form is not an entry form, these will be available later in the year.”

Wellington in Bloom as a group stopped its work in 2020, but the town council has kept alive its name and spirit in its open spaces work and entries to South West in Bloom.

The authority will keep the expression of interest form available for the next four weeks and consider the responses before taking a decision on whether or not to bring back the gardens competition.

Last year, Wellington as a town won gold in the South West in Bloom event for the first time since 2008.

The triumph came just months after the town council took ownership of Wellington Park and other green spaces from Somerset Council.
