A NUMBER of events are taking place in Wellington this VE Day marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

At 9am at the Wellington Monument, the Town Crier will be reading out the official VE Day 80th anniversary proclamation, which will also be filmed and photographed for later viewing.

A two-minute silence will be held at midday in the town centre, on the corner of Fore Street and South Street. The Town Crier will ring his bell to mark the beginning of the silence and will make its end by reading the VE Day proclamation once again.

From 7pm, locals are invited to gather in Wellington Park to listen to Wellington Silver Band from 7.15pm, followed by Liz-EE at 8.15pm for performances of popular wartime music and marches. There will then be a VE Day tribute by the Mayor of Wellington and beacon lighting at 9.30pm.

Oaktree Court care home are welcoming visitors throughout the day, to enjoy a coffee morning with VE Day cake and a raffle from 10am, and a musical afternoon with live performances and scones from 3pm. All money raised will go towards Combat Stress to support veterans living with mental health issues.

Wiveliscombe will also be hosting a VE DAY concert led by Wiveliscombe Town Band at 7pm at St Andrew’s Church. Tickets cost £10 per adult and £5 for children under 16, which includes a cold buffer of dishes taken from ‘The Victory Cookbook’ by Marguerite Patten. To book, contact [email protected]
