Wellington's fire station celebrated its 60th birthday on Friday, June 23.

The station was founded in 1963, and has served the town and the surrounding area ever since.

A statement posted to social media by Wellington station read: "A historic day for the station today as it marks its 60th anniversary since opening. The station has seen fathers, sons and dedicated individuals give their time and effort to serve the community of Wellington and when needed further afield to help others.

"The station has a rich history of photographs and recognitions of the hard work that the team has delivered. Some notable incidents include the fire at Buncefield oil depot in 2005, the Penzance to London train fire in 1978, the Royal Clarence Hotel fire in 2016 and the flooding of the Somerset levels in 2014 to name a few.

"The station has evolved with the ever growing needs of the public and the training and equipment has been upgraded to match. Our current top of the range appliances differ very much from those used when the station first came into service. Here’s to the next 10 years C7, 07, 70 Wellington."

The station was the 12th to open in Somerset, and cost just £8500 to build. Over the decades its crews have responded to well over ten thousand incidents.
