A YEAR 10 pupil from Wellington School has starred in the BBC’s new adaptation of ‘Lord of the Flies’.

Tom was cast two years ago after elite casting agent Nina Gold launched a nationwide search for boys to appear in the series.

As part of the process, casting agents visited Wellington School, auditioning 23 students.

Three were later invited to audition at Nina Gold’s London studio, where Tom was ultimately selected.

Based on William Golding’s 1954 novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’ tells the story of a group of schoolboys stranded on a tropical island with no adult supervision following a fatal plane crash.

The series is written by Jack Thorne, who also wrote the critically acclaimed drama Adolescence.

This week, Wellington School’s director of drama, Claire Davies, and choreographer Dean Brammall attended the premiere of the first episode at the British Film Institute, alongside Tom, who plays the role of Bill in the series.

In conversation with the headmaster, Tom reflected on his journey with humility and pride, speaking honestly about how fortunate he feels to have had the opportunity.

Sitting in the cinema, Mrs Davies was reminded of the early auditions held in the school drama studio, the recalls in London, and the courage it took at every stage for Tom to keep saying yes.

Following the screening, a Q&A with writer Jack Thorne, director Marc Munden, and producer Joel Wilson praised Tom for his skill and performance.

Claire Davies, director of drama, said: "We are so immensely proud of Tom and everything that he has achieved. We can't wait to watch the whole series and share the joy of seeing one of our very own students star in such a huge BBC drama."

All episodes of Lord of the Flies will be on BBC iPlayer on Sunday, February 8.
