REMEMBRANCE Sunday in Wellington started shortly before 3pm when the Remembrance Parade left Wellington School to make its way to the annual Service of Remembrance at Wellington’s war memorial in the Park.

The parade was headed by the Wellington School CCF Band, followed by the Royal British Legion (RBL) Wellington branch standard, Wellington Women’s Section branch standard, other Royal British Legion branch standards and Armed Forces Association standards from across the county.

Also, on parade were RBL branch chairman Ray Filler, Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow, Mayor of Taunton Deane Borough Council Cllr Catherine Herbert and Wellington Mayor Cllr Gary James.

Before the start of the Service of Remembrance RBL Wellington branch chaplain the Revd. Tim Treanor dedicated the new tablet installed on Wellington’s war memorial. It lists the names of the fallen from Wellington in the First World War and Second World War. These names had been omitted from previous records.

The annual Act of Remembrance was led by Revd. Treanor, assisted by other ministers from Churches Together in Wellington.

During the wreath-laying ceremony, RBL president Michael Rose read the list of the newly added names.

Many organisations in the town laid wreaths, including local schools Beech Grove Primary, Court Fields Community, Rockwell Green Primary, St John’s Primary School and Wellesley Park Primary.

The RBL Wellington branch would like to thank the parents and teaching staff from all the schools for taking the time to allow the young people to take part in this important event.

Our thanks also go to the many other organisations in Wellington including Churches Together in Wellington and the town clerk, Greg Dyke, for his assistance with the timings and the assembly of the parade at the school.

Once again thanks is extended to members of the WI in Wellington, assisted by members of the Townswomen’s Guild, whose displays of hand-knitted poppies adorn Wellington’s Garden of Remembrance, Monmouth Gardens in North Street and Lancer Court, Wellington.
