COURT Fields School in Wellington has been awarded ‘Champion’ status by the National Citizenship Service (NCS).
The school is one of only three in Somerset to receive the accolade from the NCS in recognition of its commitment to supporting, promoting and recruiting young people onto the NCS programme.
Paul Cowling, who is responsible for careers in the school, said: “It is a great achievement to be given ‘Champion’ status. Our commitment to the programme has been rewarded by the amazing and positive feedback we have received from students who took part last year.
“NCS has provided our students with the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, to take on new challenges and, perhaps most importantly, learn about their community and how they can make a difference.”
The NCS programme lasts three weeks, is aimed at 16-17 year olds and takes place over the school holidays. Two separate residential periods away from home include exciting outdoor activities. Students are also given time to develop new skills while learning more about their communities and how they can make a difference through social action projects.
Education Secretary Justine Greening said: “It’s really fantastic to see that so many pupils have already benefited from the wide range of programmes provided by the NCS.
“I want to congratulate all the champion schools and thank them for their hard work and commitment in helping young people across the country gain vital skills that will help them get on in life and fulfil their potential. I want to see more schools getting involved.”
