WELLINGTON School student Lucy Hemming has been selected to be a Lord Lieutenant Cadet for Somerset this year.

The prestigious award is given to six top cadets from all branches of the cadet world in Somerset, and Lucy will be supporting the current Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Anne Maw.

Lucy is the CCF Cadet through her involvement in the Air Force cadets at Wellington School.  

She has already taken part in her first Royal engagement – she met and accompanied HRH Sophie, The Countess of Wessex, together with the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, at the opening of Queen Camel School.

Lucy will be called on over the course of the coming year to assist the Lord Lieutenant as required – often on parade for Royal visits – and act as ambassador for her organisations and the young people of Somerset. When on duty, Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets wear a distinctive sash with the badge of their appointment to denote their role.

The office dates from the reign of Henry VIII, and the Lord Lieutenant was originally responsible for the maintenance of order and for local defence.

The Cadets are chosen on their merits within the cadet force, and for their dedication and work within the local community.

Wellington has provided Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets over many years. Headmaster Henry Price said: “I am delighted for Lucy. It is a great honour for her and a reflection of the highly regarded stature of our CCF.

“Lucy contributes enormously not only to our Combined Cadet Force but also to many other areas of school life.”
