THE ongoing running of Wellington’s successful Wacky Wednesdays school holiday activity programme is to be taken over by the town council.
The Wacky Wednesdays initiative has been held for several years as a series of activities held in Wellington Park and other open spaces during the summer.
The events attract large numbers of local families and allow children to take part in outdoor play, creative activities, sports, and community-led fun.
The programme has been run in the past by a partnership involving volunteers and local groups, but now the organising steering group is looking for support from the town council to manage the administrative elements.
Cllr Mark Lithgow, speaking at the town council’s community committee meeting said: “We need to take this over as it needs to be sustainable.”
And Cllr Justin Cole said: “We should be doing this and let us think bigger.”
Councillors agreed to approve the council taking over the governance of the Wacky Wednesdays programme and providing co-ordination and management support.
It was confirmed that the existing Wacky Wednesdays bank account would be closed and remaining funds transferred to the council.
The council’s community development officer, Laura Batcha, in a report, said: “The programme would continue to be delivered through partnership working with local organisations and volunteers, maintaining the collaborative approach that has historically made the programme successful.
“The existing Wacky Wednesdays steering group will continue in its current format to play an important role in shaping the programme and supporting delivery through partnership working.
“The involvement of Wellington Town Council also provides an opportunity to support the long-term sustainability of the programme and, over time, explore opportunities with the steering group to refresh elements of delivery, broaden participation, and strengthen partnership involvement while building on the strong foundations already established by the steering group.”
