IN THE second match of the summer season at Wellington Bowling Club, a mixed triples home match was played against teams from Culm Vale Bowling Club in Devon. An exciting and closely fought match finished with a victory to Wellington by 90 shots to 76, writes Martin Speakman.
On the first rink, Janet Moore, Tony Woollard and Arthur Carter were leading to begin with but the Culm Vale trio played very well to come through and win 20 shots to 14.
On rink 2, Jane Hayes, Peter White and Darren Sparks found themselves 4 – 8 down at the halfway point but they fought back to overtake and win a close game 15 – 10.
Culm Vale put up a good fight on the next rink and Wendy Scott, Steve Bradnum and Tony Gibson were 13 – 15 down with one to play. However they managed to grab 2 shots in the last to catch up for a 15 – 15 draw.
Andy Copping, June Anderson and Alan Moore were level with their opponents on 5 shots each early on but they settled to their work and moved ahead to win by a fair margin, 22 – 14.
Ian Lloyd, Monica Carter and Ian Hollingsworth ran into trouble in their match. In the fifth end the Culm Vale team picked up a “hotshot”. That is when a team collects the maximum number of shots in the same end. They scored all 8 to move from 5 – 3 down to 11 – 5 up.
Fortunately for the Wellington team they fought back to win a very close battle 24 – 17.
Bowler of the match was Ian Lloyd, who only began playing bowls at the club last year. He bowled extremely well, despite his disability, to help carry his team to victory.
