WELLINGTON Bowling Club Ladies enjoyed their first County League home match on Saturday and they looked resplendent in their new Saturday League club shirts kindly sponsored by W.J. South West Ltd.

However, they knew they had to play well because the visitors brought three powerful teams from Taunton's Vivary Park.

On the first rink, Debbie Lane, Tracey Richbell and skip Lynda Manning found themselves in a really close contest. By the eighth end they were level at 5 shots each. The Wellington ladies pulled ahead but by the 16th and with only two to play, the Taunton trio had a one shot lead, 12 – 11. An amazing five shots in the 17th carried the Wellington trio through to a good, but very close win 16 – 14.

On the second rink the Taunton team were leading 5 – 1 after four ends. Liz Copping, Marguerite Nichols and skip Gill Groves fought back to level it at five all after nine ends. With only one end to play the Wellington ladies were one shot ahead on 13 – 12 and they made sure of it with a single in the last for a 14 – 12 victory.

On the last rink Wendy Scott, Diana Dagg and skip Christine Willcocks set off at a terrific pace and by the sixth they were leading 9 – 0. But the Taunton ladies settled down and crept back into the game. They overtook in the 15th end and with just one more to play they led 20 – 15.It all looked a lost cause for the Wellington side but in the last end they took a terrific seven shots to pinch it 22 – 20.

The final result was three wins out of three and an overall score of 52 – 46 to the victorious Wellington ladies.
